Gambia’s insane dictator Yahya Jammeh, has embarked on an internal purging of the country’s discredited judiciary, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The Nigerian born Chief Justice Emmanuel Fagbenle, was not only fired from his post, he was also detained by Gambia’s feared spy agency, the National Intelligence Agency. Justice Fagbenle’s services with the judiciary has been terminated. He was briefly held by the NIA and later released.
Mr. Fagbenle’s firing, followed the pranking of the judge hearing the case of the opposition leader Ousainou Darboe and co by Jammeh’s former Press Secretary Fatou Camara, who now lives in exiles in the United States. The judge commented on the pending case. The judge was reportedly reprimanded for his unethical conduct.
Reports have it that the judge was also summoned for questioning. He yet to be fired, but in the case of CJ Fagbenle, he has dismissed.
Also dismissed was the Solicitor General and the Attorney General’s Chambers. She has been replaced by one Saffie Sankareh.
Grapevine talks within the judiciary have it that different names are being flooded for the possible replacement of the fired Nigerian Chief Justice. The Kanilai jester is yet to appoint a new CJ.
Justice Fagbenle, came to The Gambia in the late nineties. He was among the team of Nigerian lawyers on Technical Assistance to The Gambia. He served as Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
At the end of his assignment to The Gambia, he was relegated into the judiciary, where he served to the position of High Court Judge and Appeal Court President respectively. Fagbenele later rose to the position of Chief Justice.
