Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is expected to arrive in Banjul, in the next few hours, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The Nigerian statesman is visiting the politically polarized West African nation, on Friday. He is a special envoy charged with brokering peace between The Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh and the opposition.
Gambians are going to the polls in December of this year. The Gambian dictator has vowed to exterminate the Mandinka ethic group. He accuses them of trying to destabilize the country.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that Mr. Obsanjo has visited the country. Mr. Obsanjo has in the past reprimanded Jammeh for his heavy-handedness towards the opposition. During his past visit, Obasanjo prevailed on Jammeh to respect democratic freedom, and the rule of law.
