Gambia: Truck Driver Accused Of Killing 14 Van Passengers Detained By Police!


At least 14 people have been killed including men and women, when the passenger van vehicle they were travelling in crashed along the Tujereng/Tanji highway on Friday, following a deadly collusion with a truck, the Freedom Newspaper can report. Some of the causalities were women fish sellers from Tanji. Only two people survived during the fatal automobile accident.

foday-contaPolice Spokesman  Superintendent Foday Conta, has attributed the accident to over speeding. He told this reporter that break failure was also contributing factor to the crash. 

According to the police image maker, the Truck driver, who allegedly caused the accident, has been taken into custody. He said the driver is currently helping the police with their accident. No charges have been filed against the driver yet, he said. 

Police have interviewed eyewitnesses to the crash. The truck driver is being processed. Possible criminal charges are expected to be filed soon. 

Road accidents are common in The Gambia. Many lives have perished over the years due to road related accidents. This is attributed to lack of good road, careless and inexperienced drivers.

Many people drive cars in The Gambia without drivers’ license. The police often issue drivers’ licenses to non-qualified drivers or certified drivers. The illegal and corrupt police practices have contributed to the unprecedented road accidents; hence claiming the lives of innocent passengers, bystanders and pedestrian.
