A Mandinka radio Gambia news announcer Sarjo Barrow, has been arrested, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr. Barrow’s arrest got to do with his recent news coverage of the opposition alliance in the local Mandinka dialect. His coverage doesn’t went down well with dictator Yahya Jammeh, who ordered for his immediate arrest. Mr. Barrow is likely going to be sacked.
This followed an audio newscast widely circulated on social media, in which Mr. Barrow reported that the alliance leader Adama Barrow, and his colleagues accompanying him on the tour Halifa Sallah, Isatou Touray, and OJ Jallow, have called on voters in Nuimi Lamin and elsewhere around the country to massively vote for Mr. Adama Barrow. Similar calls were made in Badibu and Central River Region, according to the GRTS local news announcer.
According to the detained GRTS news announcer, Adama Barrow used the Darsilami meeting to assure voters that if voted into office, he will restore democracy, human rights, economic prosperity and development in The Gambia. The GRTS announcer also said Adama Barrow has pledged to bail Gambians from perpetual poverty if elected. He also promised to end the back way syndrome to Europe if elected. Mr. Barrow’s government is going to cater for the needs of the Gambian youths, he reported.
Angered by Sarjo Barrow’s frank and unbiased reporting, Jammeh ordered for his arrest. Mr. Barrow is the third GRTS staffer to be arrest in this election season. His former boss Momodou Sabally, and another GRTS reporter were detained few weeks ago. Sabally is still under state custody.
The new DG of GRTS Lamin Manga, could not be reached for immediate comment. But sources at GRTS have confirmed the arrest of Sarjo Barrow.
