As many media reports wrongly claim that the defeated United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate in Sibanor Assan Jobarteh was among the National Assembly nominees , a news dispatch issued late Tuesday by the Presidency sets the record straight about those picked by President Adama Barrow.

“President Adama Barrow has nominated the following people to serve as National Assembly Members:Ms. Mariam Jack Denton, Mr. Majanko Samusa, Ms. Ndey Yassin Secka–Sallah, Ms. Kumba Jaiteh, and Mr. Momodou Sanneh,” said Gambia Presidency.

On Tuesday, the five Presidential nominees were sworn into post-Jammeh Parliament along with the 53 NAMs voted on. Mariam Jack Denton and Momodou Sanneh are going to serve as Speaker and deputy-Speaker, respectively.

In an attempt to clear the air on the issue, the Presidency said, “any other information contrary to the above, especially as published in the media on the 11th April 2017 is not from the Office of the
President.”

The tiny West African nation is moving towards a new era, and authorities have vowed to right the wrongs of the former regime. As a major player in the current political dispensation, high hopes are placed on the media to fulfill its public duty.
