Papa Njie has opted out from the United Democratic Party (UDP) Mayoral convention selection process–saying that the process was not transparent. Mr. Njie has announced that he is going to contest as an independent candidate. His withdrawal from the UDP ticket race, followed numerous concerns raised by Njie to the party’s leadership about the shady manner of the selection process. Mr. Talib Bensouda, the son of lawyer Amie Bensouda has been selected to run under a UDP ticket in the coming mayoral race.
“We have written three petitions to the UDP party about issues that we were not happy with it; especially the delegates. We were hoping that they will reply to those letters. And I was very confident that they will reply to those letters; up till Wednesday; so that the delegate selections would be fair and transparent and apparently that has not happened,” Papa Njie said.
“So, as events unfolds that’s how we move forward; those things what we asked for them to reform, they have not done that. And on that basis, I contacted my people that I am representing, and they have decided that I should go ahead and announce my candidature as an independent candidate. I would not want to deal with in detail, but the delegate selection process was not favorable to myself. And if you guys want a detailed explanation, we can have a separate interview. People from different constituencies can elaborate because I rely on them. Each of them has detailed reasons for us not accepting the way the delegates were selected,” Mr. Njie told newsmen.
Mr. Njie said has evidence to back up his allegations against the UDP. “The process is not transparent. I have facts to back it up,” he said.
Mr. Njie also talked about the issue of tribal politics, which he said is polarizing the country. Though, he refrained from commenting further on the matter.
“I want to unify the KMC. I want to unify all the tribes of the KMC,” he said.
