A Gambian army officer, who was sent on study leave in China, is in desperate need of help to be evacuated back home, following what he called his deteriorating health condition. Lt. Sulayman Senghore, has used all avenues at his disposal just to facilitate his timely evacuation from China to Banjul, but he said, he was told by his command in Banjul that for him to be evacuated, he needs a health clearance certificate. Senghore is seemingly running out of patience. He told the Freedom Newspaper in a phone conversation that he has stopped attending classes because of his poor health condition. He also contends that he cannot learn in the absence of good health. “With all what I got get here in the future, my health condition is paramount. It’s like am in solitary confinement and my state of alertness has been derailed. I sit in my room all day and night, unless I manage to get vegetables to eat, I have no appetite for other stuff. Why am I being forced into something that my health can’t withstand?,” he asked.

“I want to let the GAF back home know that I am not attending classes any longer due to my current situation and facilitate my return in the shortest possible time. I am respectfully appealing to all of them including the CDS in order to avoid further deterioration of my health. The belief here is though they didn’t detect something serious, they also respect the reasons in my claims. Let them facilitate my return home! Please,” he added.

Below is Lt. Sulayman Senghore’s open letter to The Gambian Army Command.

………………………………………………

Morning Pa. It all means to get my current health status known to where I hail from. Please permit me to use your medium. I hope the higher authority may get it and take a swift action.

I arrived in China on the 7th of September 2018 on a course and two days later underwent medical exams. I was verbally told I met their requirements to stay and study. I asked for the report, but it was declined because any failure would have got to be cautioned and flown back according to them. I started well with courage and determination to get results that keep my national colors up.

As we all know health status is never constant and no one should be blamed for any unusual occurrence that may arise as a result of forces beyond our control. Further into the course, I started feeling back pain and sleeplessness, vomiting almost everything I consumed. I reported sick and was taken to hospital where the reason of the pain could not be ascertained. All the results I had are with me apart from the one the academy did for their consumption. I was given medication to ease the vomiting. Resorting to buying stuff like cookies and food similar to Gambian became the only option. I kept strong with jogging other exercises to get relaxed and expect a good sleep, but nothing could be achieved. I watched TV and prayed sometimes to roll with the night in preparation for the day sessions, but I always feel distracted by the pain and as such could not absorb something. I tried my best to inform my colleagues in different parts of China and they check on me time to time by SMS or voice messages which are most easily used medium of communication. Diplomacy got into my mind and I decided to scout for embassy.

I was given the number for a wonderful Gambian at our Embassy in China. I explained my whole story to him and he felt so remorseful. Several days ago, I took a decision to inform the academy administration about my condition, that my stay here would be useless if I cannot further achieve what my presence calls for. They agreed and told me to put it in writing and hand it over to them to take it up. They also advised me to get it known to other stakeholders, our embassy and the formation I hail from back home.

I wrote and got them a copy, got one to the embassy through an email, of course through a friend abroad whom I was able to only send through whatsapp snap to pass it over emails. I also sent a written one to some of my senior counterparts for onward delivery to my institution back home (Defense Hq), whether it was facilitated I could not conclude, contrary to what the academy is saying “that if they are given the green light by other stakeholders, they will facilitate my return based on my condition is a short possible period because its diplomacy, though they fully understand my situation”,  I was told by my seniors here that GAF back home can only act with a medical report. A medical report that

I cannot get, not even seeing a doctor again with what am going through? Is that the way personal health opinion is treated back home?

With all what I got get here in the future, my health condition is paramount. It’s like am in solitary confinement and my state of alertness has been derailed. I sit in my room all day and night, unless I manage to get vegetables to eat, I have no appetite for other stuff. Why am I being forced into something that my health can’t withstand?

I want to let the GAF back home know that I am not attending classes any longer due to my current situation and facilitate my return in the shortest possible time. I am respectfully appealing to all of them including the CDS in order to avoid further deterioration of my health. The belief here is though they didn’t detect something serious, they also respect the reasons in my claims. Let them facilitate my return home! Please.
