Two officers of the National Drug Enforcement Agency have been taken into custody amid allegations of mishandling and tampering of drug cases, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The detained officers are one Mr. Jatta and Mr. Jallow. They are being held at the NDEA CTI offices in Kololi.
A source close to the NDEA said the arrest and subsequent detention of Jatta and Jallow was allegedly orchestrated by Pa Habib Mbye, who is an adviser to the NDEA Director General Bakary Gassama. Mr. Mbye had reportedly ordered for the accused officers to be placed in the NDEA cells, pending the outcome of an investigations initiated by the agency.
Both Jatta and Jallow have been languishing behind the NDEA cells for the past three days, we were told. They are yet to be charged with any offence.
Their arrest had to do with a drug case. The officers have been accused of mishandling the case in question.
In recent months, NDEA officers have been turned in by drug suspects for allegedly aiding and abetting them in the sale of illegal drugs. Drug suspects also claimed that some of the confiscated drug exhibits that were meant to be destroyed by the state, were being recycled in the market for sale—thanks to the handiwork of some dishonest anti-narcotic officers.
The NDEA Directorate could not be reached for comment at press time.
