As the United Democratic Party (UDP) is set to hold its Congress on December 7 to December 9, at Buffer Zone, Team President Adama Barrow is also organizing what appears to be a “Counter Congress” in Mangkamang-Kunda, in the Upper Region of The Gambia, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. December 11th to December 15th is scheduled date for Team Barrow’s Congress. State House staff, the Presidential security detail, the police intervention unit (PIU) and members of Barrow’s entourage have been placed on notice to submit their per diem allowances forms ahead of the Congress. Some of the people travelling with Mr. Barrow said they have submitted their forms on Wednesday.
President Barrow recently told a delegation from the West Coast Region that his decision to contest or win a second term mandate, would be determined by the amount of developmental work he has championed during his first term in office. Barrow also said the delegation who came to see him, was sufficient enough for a Congress. He said no Congress can outnumber the crowd that came to the State House this past weekend. He was apparently taking jab at the opposition.
Barrow came to power in December of 2016 after defeating Gambia’s long-time dictator Yahya Jammeh. He campaigned on a three-year transition period if elected. He has since changed his mind. He said he is going to remain in power until 2021. He was voted for five year mandate, per the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia
Mr. Barrow is working on setting up a political party. His surrogates have been mobilizing for grassroots support for his Youth Movement.
