Baba Saho, the NIA officer, who was accused of torturing Batch Samba Jallow, a former Gambian educationist, was hired to serve in Barrow’s government by Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and also Vice President of The Gambia, Freedom Newspaper has been reliably informed. Mr. Darboe was Gambia’s Foreign Minister at the time of Saho’s appointment to serve in the Foreign Service. Saho, who was sacked from the NIA by dictator Yahya Jammeh, was living in the United Kingdom, prior to the change of government in December of 2016. Saho now works at The Gambian Embassy in Guinea Bissau as a Diplomat.

Mr. Darboe was said to have played an instrumental role in the shortlisting of the majority of the people, who were appointed to serve in the Foreign Service. He ensured that his party supporters, friends and acquaintances were posted into the Foreign Service.

Mr. Darboe has in the past denied favoring his supporters to occupy key positions in the Foreign Service. Sources familiar with the story said Darboe was given some kind of leverage in the beginning of Barrow’s administration to recommend and shortlist folks for employment.

Baba Saho was one of those “ so called UDP supporters,” who happens to benefit from Darboe’s mass job distribution at the Foreign Ministry. Baba Saho became a UDP supporter while living in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Saho was among the most hostile NIA agents against Mr. Darboe’s UDP party during dictator Jammeh’s watch. He has arrested dozens of UDP supporters during his career at the discredited National Intelligence Agency, now renamed as the State Intelligence Services (SIS).

It has been gathered that it was Baba Saho, who led the NIA team to Basse, in the Upper River Region of The Gambia, to arrest Ousainou Darboe and co, following a political violence between the UDP supporters and the former ruling APRC party militants in that region of The Gambia. The incident left one Alieu Njie, an APRC driver dead.

Mr. Darboe, and his entourage—more importantly his party’s top Executive members were charged with murder. Also charged was “journalist Madi Ceesay.” Ceesay is the UDP MP for Serre-Kunda West. The case was later dropped, following the intervention of some sub-regional leaders.
