THE THREE YEAR ACTIVITY PLAN OF THE WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF THE GAMBIA (WAG)

The Writers’ Association of The Gambia has received donation of 147 books from the Gambia National Library Service Authority (GNLSA) on Wednesday, 12th June 2019. As the new executive embark on a courtesy call to various stakeholders in the country on a Book-A-Child nationwide tour to schools and institutions, we are equally aware, with much concern, the poor results in the WAEC examinations as well as the huge number of students coming out of the different levels of our education system, facing huge challenges to integrate in the work of life.

Our mandate is to sensitize Gambian children and students in particular, on the importance of reading and writing in our society. Our courtesy calls give us the opportunity to share with the stakeholders what contributions we wish to make, including networking and other activities geared towards attaining an affordable, relevant and quality education for all, supporting children improve their writing and learning skills by creating the environment for reading and solving the problems of poor readership in the country.  As observed, our mission is promoting a literary culture in The Gambia.

The Association has elected, on 27 April 2019 at the Alliance Francaise, a new executive. The 11-member executive is largely composed of youths who have amply demonstrated energy and enthusiasm to serve the association and help support their brothers and sisters in the schools to improve their English both in writing and reading.

The WAG membership forms can be obtained at the NCAC Research and Documentation Unit in Fajara ( behind the GT Bank, opposite the US Embassy ), to be given to interested members for free provided that they’re willing to pay/ have paid their annual contributions of D2000 for old members, and a registration fee of D500 to be paid by new members who wish to register with the Association.

The Association has so far paid courtesy calls to the following institutions/stakeholders:

Hon. Hadrammeh Sidibeh,  honorable Minister, Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS),

Mr. Hassoum Ceesay, Director General of National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC);

Ms. Fumiko Nagano, Chief of Mission the International Organization for Migration Gambia Office (IOM);

Were 5 times hosted on the AM Show on GRTS; and then;

Recently had an audience with the Country Director of ChildFund International The Gambia, Mrs. Musu Kuta Komma.

The Association is organizing a consultative workshop in August 2019 in order to present a roadmap for having a national strategy for reading and writing.

We wish to express our profound gratitude to the Director General and management and staff of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for their generous support and partnership.

We are happy to inform the general public that we will be participating in 2019 African Writers Conference and awards scheduled for September 28th, 2019, at the Sarit Centre, Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. We will also be soon announcing our Panel of Judges for the 2020 Lenrie Peters Memorial Prize for Gambian Literature.

The new executive has reviewed the constitution of the ASSOCIATION and presents a Three Year Plan of Action to allow members decide on their mandate, the membership participation and other relevant matters. The Plan of Action of the Association include activities geared towards supporting children improve their writing skills by creating the environment for reading.

These activities are as follows:

The Dr. Lenrie Peters Memorial Prize (LPMP): The Peters Literary Award Night is to be held the 1st Saturday of May Every Year ( started in 2019; and 22 Gambian writers were awarded),

The Banjul Writer’s Residency ( BWR): To be held on the Last Saturday of October Every Year ( starting  2020);

World Book and Copyright Week Celebrations: To be held once every year in April;

The Kunta Kinteh International Book Festival ( KKIBF): To Be jointly organized by WAG and the Gambia National Library every year on the first week of September ( starting 2020); and the;

National Spelling Bee Competition: The WAG Annual Spelling Bee will be be held in January every year. (starting 2020).
