Lamin Sima, resigned as Branch Manager for the Social Security Housing and Finance Corporation Bakau unit on August 5th, 2019. Sima, in a letter addressed to the SSFC Managing Director Muhammed Manjang said: “ My intention to go on early retirement is motivated by my desire to work on my own in developing a career in entrepreneurship.” Lamin’s resignation came in the wake of an illegal land allocation perpetrated by some senior officials of the Corporation’s Housing Department. Some of the Housing officials were arrested and granted bail. Sima was questioned by the police but was never charged. SSHFC Lands were illegally allocated to a good number of Gambians, without the Housing Department following what insiders called “due authority, rules and regulations of the Corporation.” Among those allocated land, were their friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. The sale process was also dubious and fraudulent. It is a multi- million dalasis illegal land allocation scam at the SSHFC.
On August 16th, Gambia’s Foreign Ministry wrote to Modou Lamin Sima to inform him that he has been appointed as an Ambassador at large by President Adama Barrow. The letter which was signed by Abdoulie Bah, on behalf of the Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary said: “ I have the honor and pleasure to inform you that His Excellency Adama Barrow President of The Republic of The Gambia is pleased to appoint you as Ambassador At-Large for Business and Investment of The Republic of The Gambia with effect from 13th August 2019. In this regard, you are, among other things required to promote the interests of The Gambia.”
Mr. Sima is a native of Kanikunda, in the North Bank Region of The Gambia. His appointment hasn’t been announced by the Barrow State House.
When contacted for comment, Sima confirmed the story. “Yes it is true,” he told the Freedom Newspaper.
Some official of Gambia’s Social Security, Housing and Finance Corporation (SSHFC) have been granted police bail on July 17th after spending overnight under police custody, Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Among the arrested officials include: Alhagie Fatty, Senior Housing Manager, Modou Sarr, Assistant Manager Housing and one Amie Sarr. Ms. Sarr works at the SSHFC documentation Department.
The arrest followed allegations that the accused officials were allegedly engaged in what SSHFC insiders called “wrongful allocation of plots of land” belonging to the Corporation. MD Manjang was said to have turned in the implicated workers to the police; hence which led to their subsequent arrest.
A Gambian law enforcement source, who reached out to us said, the accused SSHFC officials were detained overnight. The official also said investigation into the matter is ongoing.
