Honourable Yankuba Sonko is one of the most highly accomplished senior police officers of his generation, earning him the admiration of both members of the security services and the public. He is a highly respected officer, who deservedly rose through the ranks to become the Inspector General of The Gambia Police Force. Until his appointment as the Minister of Interior, Honourable Sonko was working as the Adviser to the Minister of Interior since April 2018.
During his time as the head of The Gambia Police Force, Honourable Sonko championed series of reform programs to instill discipline and professionalism in the police. He oversaw the recruitment of highly qualified individuals as a well as encouraged and created opportunities to build the capacities of the junior and middle cadres of the police.
Mr. Sonko holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Law from the Metropolitan University of Manchester, England, and also underwent a legal training (B.L.) at the The Gambia Law School where he was conferred the tittle of Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.
As one of the longest serving police officers in the country, he held several command positions from 1983, such as Deputy Inspector General of Gambia Police, Officer Commanding Prosecution of the Kanifing Division, Crime Management Coordinator, Commander of the Fraud Squad, among others.
Additionally, Honourable Sonko also served as the Regional Commander of the UN Mission in East Timor and undertook training in various law, conflict prevention, money laundering, human rights, among others, in various parts of the world.
Guided by the Security Sector Reform programme of the government, it is expected that Honourable Sonko will positively impact on the internal security, peace, and stability of the country.
