UDP STUDENTS’ WING PRESENTS A TOKEN OF CASH TO JARRA JAWARA WHO WAS ASSAULTED BY SOME UNSCRUPULOUS MILITANTS OF APRC OVER THE WEEKEND.
Earlier today, the United Democratic Party’s Students’ Wing paid a courtesy call on one of the prominent figures of the party, Jarra Jawara in Yundum. Madam Jawara was allegedly attacked by some hooligans and unscrupulous militants of the Alliance For Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) whilst on their way to attending a mega rally in Abuko this past Saturday. Madam Jarra who always hoist a UDP flag on top of a big tree where she sells groundnuts, was physically molested by a man in the midst of the APRC convoy to a point of sustaining physical injury.
The man in question, is alleged to be an active military personnel working with the Gambia National Army (GNA). According madam Jawara, the guy felt discontented and decried of why she hung a UDP flag when already she knew that they (APRC) are passing by. He thus assaulted her and pulled out a bayonet (Military knife) from his military pack threatening to kill her if she dare makes any utterance. It was at this juncture that the culprit together with a group of other APRC militants vandalized her table where she displays her products, threw away a basin of food she was having as lunch with her family, vandalized her wheelbarrow, took away her money at an amount of D5,700, as well as her two mobile phones. She said in protection of her life, she could not counterpoise and of course there was no one along the highway who could swiftly come to her rescue.
As a show of solidarity, empathy and unison, the Students’ Wing gave her a token of cash in compensation for the damages caused to her by these violence mongers of the APRC. As an affiliate to the United Democratic Party, we totally condemn such a misdemeanor. This idiotic action must be brought to book, and we are therefore urging the leadership of the United Democratic Party to exploit all legal avenues necessary in bringing the culprits to justice in defense of Madam Jawara’s fundamental right to association.
Members of the UDP cannot continue to be victimized and always persecuted without justice being served. We cannot tolerate the existence of a political party that is happily besieged with mobs of violence fanners who does not respect peoples’ fundamental rights to association as enshrined in the 1997 constitutional instrument. Our rights to support any political party of our choices should not be dwindled or restrained by anyone irrespective of one’s class or position.
