The detained three years Jotna Executive members and followers have been charged; Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Abdou Njie, Yanks Darboe and co have been accused of seditious intent; inciting violence, destruction to property among others. They are likely to going to appear in court on Tuesday.
The banned Jotna group leaders and their followers were arrested on Saturday. This followed a protest march, which later turned violent. The government said 18 paramilitary officers were injured and 7 civilians during the disturbances.
The protesters wanted President Adama Barrow to resign from the Presidency and organize early elections. They have accused Barrow of not living up to his campaign promise of running a three-year transitional government.
According to sources, the charged Jotna leaders and members would be arraigned at the Kanifing magistrates court. It is not clear if the prosecution would entertain the issue of bail for the accused persons. Though the charges proffered against them are bailable.
Meanwhile, there are preparations in high gears to storm the Kanifing court on Tuesday morning by some members and sympathizers of the banned three years Jotna movement.
The Jotna Movement was banned on Sunday by The Gambian government. The government claimed that the group was subversive, illegal, and violent. It also said the group was not legally registered in The Gambia.
Yankuba Darboe is a Gambian British National. He is an Immigration Lawyer in the United Kingdom. Darboe and his colleagues fate would be decided by Gambia’s legal system. They have been scheduled to appear in court later today.
