The Gambia Transport Union has cancelled its scheduled move to close The Gambia/Senegal border, Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The Union said it was going to close the border on Wednesday. The decision to cancel the border closure, followed an intervention from The Gambian authorities. Transport Union President Omar Ceesay and his team were prevailed upon to rescind their planned decision to close the border on Wednesday; Ceesay and his group agreed.
The Gambia has been transformed as a province of Senegal under Barrow’s rule. The new administration is opposed to any border closure, sources said. The regime had communicated its opposition to the planned move to close the border to The Gambian Transport Union.
President Adama Barrow relies on Senegal for his security upkeep among other national security matters. Hence, he wouldn’t tolerate any move that would jeopardize his brotherly cordial relationship with President Macky Sall.
Gambian commercial drivers have complained about being harassed by their Senegalese colleagues. Senegalese transporters wouldn’t allow Gambian commercial vehicles to enter into Senegal. Even The Gambian government buses services haven’t been spared by the Senegalese Transport Union.
An official of The Gambia Transport Union has confirmed the cancellation of the proposed border closure. The official wouldn’t explain the circumstances that led to the sudden cancellation of the border closure.
Authorities in Banjul are afraid to anger the Macky Sall government; hence they have decided to undercut the drivers decision, said a well trusted source.
