MAIDEN SPEECH OF THE ALL PEOPLES PARTY DELIVERED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE OF THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION (IEC) ON Friday, 17TH JANUARY 2020
BY GUMBO ALI TOURAY
The Chairman of IEC and staff, invited guests, members of the press present here today, ladies and gentlemen, APP Executive and Members.
As we enter a New Year 2020, the APP conveys our best wishes to all of you.
I would like to begin by extending sincere greetings of The All Peoples Party to His Excellency President Adama Barrow and his government;
Greetings to the entire Gambian nation, including all Political Parties in the country;
Special recognition to our religious and traditional leaders;
The same applies to the differentially–able persons of this nation. Their condition is our concern. The APP wishes to assure that in assuming authority, we shall give them special recognition, status and assistance;
Greetings to the women and youth of this nation;
We also extend greetings to Gambians in the Diaspora. We know that while being abroad, your hearts are still at home rendering so much assistance to families in support of living. Simultaneously, you pay visits to the country as and when you can. I know this because I also shared the experiences of the Diaspora, having lived many years of my life in Europe where I once lived in exile.
Lastly but not the least, we extend greetings to the members of the Diplomatic Corps in this country and by extension all expatriates, immigrants and visitors, who either wish to make The Gambia as their home orto live as visitors. No matter wherever you come from or whatever is your purpose here, our new party welcomes you, not as an outsider, but as part of our ideology of hospitality and greater internationalism.
In general, The APP calls upon all of you to come, tojoin us, and support the new party. It is a party with a different ideology, new and refined thinking representing a new beginning with a different alternative and vision for The Gambia.
Now let me tell you who we are and why we resolve to join the race.
It all started on 10th November 2018, when a group of Gambians in a normal discussion session held at Sinchu Village lamented about perineal problems prevailing in the country including difficulties youth are facing in this country, increasing poverty of families, inadequacy of healthcare, deplorable environmental conditions, poor infrastructure and so forth. A decision was reached to form an organised group called a Task Force for Better Gambia, gradually became an NGO and finally becoming the All Peoples’ Party being accorded Certificate of Registration today. Thus to all those members of the Task Force Committee, we salute them and convey our esteem gratitude for the gallant step they had taken.
Our political philosophy is people centred, people ownership of the Party, and a party dedicated to the people of The Gambia as a nation. That is why only at a national Congress will the permanent leadership of the APP be decided and a Flag bearer be elected by the people.
We believe in genuine democracy, the rule of law, responsible government, transparency and country first. There is no room for ethnic or racial dichotomy in us hence we recognise all the ethnic groups of The Gambia. We shun religious distinction therefore we recognise all existing faiths, particularly those in minority. Upholding religious harmony, freedom of worship and inter faith coexistence are an integral part of our cardinal programmes. We do not believe in social segregation in society but a homogenous society in coexistence where all can actualise their potentials.
Our mission is to participate in the political activitiesof this nation. We recognise our constitutional rights as citizens to form and run a political party and we are doing just that. We seek no confrontation but to showand indeed shared respect and understanding among all existing political parties in the interest of national development and social progress.
Let me please emphasise that we wish to build a great party on to which all denominations belong or can be part of. We hereby call on the citizenry to please comeforward and be part of us. However, we are mindful, that we want virtuous Gambians, those who want and stand for the truth, believe in social and legaljustice, respect for human rights, to be hard working and have the readiness to pave a new path to national development and progress.
Our aim is to revamp the national economy with emphasis on the key tenets of development which includes education, health, agriculture, tourism, and particularly youth employment. We shall also give national security an important consideration.
A detailed outline of the party’s policy objectives arewell articulated in our Party Manifesto which shall be made public very soon. The Manifesto embraces our party goal and principles, Domestic Economic Policy, Global foreign Policy, Agricultural Policy, Education Policy, Environment and Climate Change, Policy on the Old, and Differentially– able, Youth Policy and Policy on Women.
Let me say that the political momentum is now rife. Do not be late to join us soon:
Where are our university colleagues?
Where are our university students?
Where are the women of this nation (for your empowerment)?
Where are the youth of this nation?
Where are the differentially–able persons?
Where is the Diaspora?
Where are the farmers of this nation?
Please come forward and team up with us to move the nation forward.
In conclusion, the APP appreciates the rigorous procedure the IEC has subjected us to accord usrecognition. Since the institution performs a nationalduty, it has our support and cooperation. We thank them for including us to the register of bona fide Gambian political parties and encourage them to continue providing a level playing field while runningthe political affairs of the nation.
I wish to thank members of the APP Task ForceCommittee for electing me as an interim leader of the Party but more so to congratulate all of them forworking tirelessly including my humble self to form the party. By extension, same goes to all the party members, both at home and in the Diaspora. We say well done to all of you.
Finally, thanks to my entire family, relatives and friends for their support, understanding and encouragement to serve The Gambia.
WE THE ALL PEOPLES PARTY THANK YOU ALL.
GUMBO ALI TOURAY
