Ebrima Dibba, a prominent member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has confirmed the revocation of the expulsion of the Brikama Area Council Chairman Sheriffo Sonko and the two ward Councilors: Momodou Bojang and Bilal Faal from their party, saying that the UDP had not followed the necessary constitutional stipulations in carrying out such expulsions; hence which has resulted in the party’s decision to rescind the recent expulsions, Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Dibba, speaking to the Freedom Newspaper, said the UDP had decided to correct the said error by formally writing to Sonko, Bojang, and Faal to attend a UDP Central Committee meeting, in which their fate would be decided. Dibba was not in the position to state the actual date scheduled for the said meeting.
“The party’s original decision was not inline with what the law has stipulated for the expulsion of elected Municipal officials. We should have invited them for a Central Committee meeting before expelling them, which was never done. Now the party has decided to formally invite them for a Central Committee meeting for their fate to be decided. I personally took Chairman Sonko’s letter to him yesterday. I handed the letter to his Secretary,” Ebrima Dibba, told me, in the local Mandinka dialect.
According to the former Gambian Diplomat Dibba, the other expelled ward Councilors were also served with letters to attend a UDP Central Committee meeting. He added that the Independent Electoral Commission was also informed about the revocation of the expulsion of the three BAC elected officials.
“We are going to decide their fate in the upcoming Central Committee meeting. Sonko and co would be asked if they are with the UDP or Barrow, in that meeting. They would be expelled from the party, if they decide to pledge their support for Barrow,” Dibba said.
Dibba said notwithstanding, Sonko and co are going to be expelled from the party because they have not demonstrated any loyalty to the UDP party.
