There is an Alkaloship dispute in Latri-Kunda Yeringanya, the Freedom Newspaper can report. The two Faal family are at loggerhead over the vacant post. This followed the death of the late Alkalo Pa Amadou Faal, who recently died.
At a community meeting held in Latrikunda yesterday, some section of the community said they would want the late Alkalo’s son Suwaibou Faal to succeed his late father. But there is a stalemate, as another group said they want Pa Omar Faal, the brother of the California based Gambian American lawyer Pa Eddi Faal to serve as an Alkalo.
A consensus couldn’t be reached at yesterday’s meeting. The meeting was adjourned for another day. Some community members had recommended for a voting to be organized to settle the simmering dispute.
Suwaibou Faal, who had been named after his late uncle, the late Journalist Suwaibou Conateh, had the support of the overwhelming community including the youth population. His co opponent Pa Omar Faal had the backing of his family and some residents.
The local Imam Basiru Drammeh is among the community leaders, who are trying to doze off the mounting tensions. Imam Drammeh has repeatedly appealed for calm and peace among the residents.
The family of Suwaibou Faal, had claimed that they were among the original settlers of Latrikunda. The family of Pa Omar Faal, were said to have hailed from Banjul, and later resettled in the community.
The Latrikunda Alkaloship position was once occupied by the Keita family in the nineties. It later went to the Faal family. Pa Omar’s Dad Alhagie M.O. Faal, later became the Alkalo, until his unfortunate death. He was succeeded by the late Pa Amadou Faal.
Both Suwaibou Faal and Pa Omar Faal could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
