An African American lady is appealing to The Gambian government not to issue travel document to her husband, who has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Service (ICE), and is on the verge of being deported to his native country, The Gambia, Freedom Newspaper can report. Alexis Sumareh’s husband Kaw Sumareh, has been under ICE custody since December of 2019. “My husband is a great person; he has no criminal record that should cause him to get deported. He overstayed his visa. We have filed two different applications to adjust his status and they both are pending. Ice has refused to release him on an Order of Supervision. They prefer to keep him detained and away from his family. I am asking the Gambian government to help us by not renewing any travel documents for any Gambian citizens. My husband deserves to be free and go to Gambia on his will and not be deported,” Mrs. Sumareh told Freedom Newspaper in a Facebook chat. She contacted this medium via Facebook over the weekend.

Mr. Sumareh is being held at the Irwin Country Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia. Atlanta, Georgia, was his home, prior to his ICE arrest.

“The U.S. is trying to get him deported back to Gambia. Bakaw Sumareh has been in United States over 20 years. We have been married for 12 and have 5 children together ages 2-11,” Mrs. Sumareh remarked.

As the Coronavirus infection rate is surging in the United States, with over 100,000 American dying from the disease, Mrs. Sumareh is concerned about the health safety of her husband. She is calling for the intervention of The Gambian government so that her husband wouldn’t be deported.

“The facility where he is located has 7 confirmed cases of Covid-19. I have asked ICE (department of Homeland Security) to release him, but they refuse. They rather keep him captive with hundreds of other inmates than to release him. ICE cares nothing about any immigrants. I am asking The Gambia to Please help us free him,” she said.

ICE could not be reached for comment during the weekend.

Below is a note we received from Mrs. Alexis Sumareh.
