Gambia’s COVID-19 allowances for frontline workers had been marred by scandals, upon scandals, this time around members of the security forces are claiming about what they called unfair sharing of the funds,  Freedom Newspaper has been informed. There is inequality in terms of payment of COVID-19 allowances to the personnel of Gambia’s security force, our sources claimed. Divisions within the police across the country, have been paid each D200,000 dalasis, while The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) respective divisions have been paid each D100,000 dalasi. The Tourism Security unit had been paid D D198,000. The COVID-19 payment allowances disparity has raised eyebrows within the two units of the force.

A write-up obtained by this medium revealed: “If this sum is subtracted from the D8.6 million dalasis that have already been approved by the ministry of finance, you are left with D6,102,00 that just disappeared into thin air. This money was embezzled today Saturday 30th May 2020 at the Police headquarters in Banjul Corruption at its peak in the Gambia government. I would like to update you about the 8.6 million dalasis that have been budgeted for the security in response to the fight against COVID-19.”

It has been gathered that each police officer would be paid a daily COVID-19 allowance of D200 dalasis, while Immigration Officers who been stationed along the border would each be paid a daily allowance of D100 dalasi.

It has been alleged that D100,000 dalasis have been allegedly stolen from the GID COVID-19 funds. The security unit was supposed to receive D200,000 allowances and not D100,000 as allocated.

Sources couldn’t explain where the alleged embezzlement occurred, but it should be noted that the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Health have been working side by side to coordinate the distribution of the COVID funds.

Below is a write up we received.
