Please join us to commend the United Democratic Party (UDP) under the leadership of Ousainou Darboe, for their party’s receptiveness towards gays and lesbians. The UDP has welcomed two prominent Gambian gays: Alieu Sarr, AKA Sarro, and Momodou Secka, AKA Secka, Secka into their party. This is a welcomed development as far as the issue of gays and lesbianism are concerned in The Gambia. The Gambia is predominantly a Muslim nation, where the Islamic religion had frowned at homosexuality. But that never stopped UDP from welcoming gays and Lesbians into their party.
The human rights of gays and lesbians should be respected. And the UDP has manifested that it would not discriminate at anyone because of the individual’s sexual orientation. Salute UDP!
Both Sarro and Secka have announced their support for the UDP party. The duos were recently wholeheartedly welcomed into the UDP. They are among the UDP diaspora supporters.
It should be noted that the UDP recently issued a press release stating their political party’s opposition to homosexuality. Yet, the same party is welcoming people, who had come out from closet to disclose their sexual orientation. Welcome to the new Gambia.
It seems that the UDP is hiding behind the gay debate to promote a political agenda. The UDP as a party, lacks the moral authority to campaign against gay issues. A party that welcomes gays and lesbians is expected to advocate for the rights of that minority group than using them for political expediency. What a shame! Double standards.
