He has over years repeatedly claimed to be a law-abiding lawyer, cum opposition leader. But it appears that he is about to walk away from his proclaimed respect for the rule of law. The Leader of the United Democratic Party Ousainou Darboe, speaking to journalists on Wednesday at his home office in Kairaba Avenue, said only infamy of mind (madness), death or his party not nominating him can stop him from running for the Presidency in 2021. He maintains that no one can prevent him from running for the Presidency.
“Let me tell you one thing, three things will prevent me from contesting the 2021election, one, I am ill, in fact mentally incapacitated, physically incapacitated, I am dead, or the UDP don’t select me as their Presidential candidate, that can prevent me, other than that nothing can stop me,” Darboe said in a rather angry voice.
Darboe had a criminal conviction record on his belt, which could disallow him from running for the Presidency come 2021. He was jailed in 2016 for organizing a protest march without permit. He was released from jail after Barrow became President. He was later pardoned by President Adama Barrow, but legal pundits said a Presidential pardoning cannot wipe out his felony record.
Darboe’s initial attempt to have the superior court to overturn his 2016 conviction failed. The court had upheld the lower court’s judgment.
He was hoping to be sanitized by the rejected draft constitution. His hope has dashed away.
The 1997 constitution prohibits felons like Darboe to occupy the seat of the Presidency. But Darboe said come 2021, he will run by force. That nobody can stop him from running for the Presidency.
