“There is too much noise in this country. Everyone is talking. There are more political parties that have been registered under my rule. We haven’t seen seen such number of political parties ever in the history of this nation. Gambians should thank God that I brought democracy in this country. We are having such a noise because President Barrow is the one who brought democracy in The Gambia,” President Barrow remarked at a meeting held at the State House on Saturday. “I have been insulted and called names on Whatsapp and other social platforms because there is democracy in the country. Some even claimed that they will kill me if they win the upcoming elections. Democracy is at work in this country,” he added.
Barrow has called for civility in Gambian politics. He says politics of insults will not develop this country.
He heaped praises for himself saying that thanks his rule, this country is now enjoying unrestricted democracy. He added that Gambian citizens are now free to speak their mind without having the fear of being arrested or charged. He also cited what he called the uncountable new political parties that have been registered during his rule.
According to President Barrow, the opposition had fought for over twenty years and yet couldn’t remove Jammeh democratically. He called out the likes of Ousainou Darboe to back up his claims.
“Ousainou Darboe, Halifa Sallah, and Hamat Bah have all tried to remove Jammeh, but without success. I came in and was able to remove Jammeh. Jammeh was not only defeated in the past elections but was also forced into exile. There are many folks, who are yearning to contest the 2021 elections. They think that it is easy to ascend to the presidency because it took me only three months to defeat Jammeh. They forgot that for fifty years, we only had two presidents in this country. This goes to show that it is not easy to get to the presidency. It is God that choose Presidents. I don’t even know how I got to the Presidency. I was just called to come and help run for President. It took me months before I made up mind. I answered to their call because I wanted to help,” Barrow said.
Barrow has also took a swipe at the likes of Ousainou Darboe.
“It is easy to claim that you have been a politician for 30 years, 40 years, that doesn’t mean that you will become a President. I am here to work; politics did not bring me here. That’s why I never give you political promises. My relationship with you guys has been bonded by work, I am here to serve you,” Barrow remarked.
The president has also promised to increase the peanut price for farmers in the coming trade season. He said the farmers would this year enjoy a 15% percent price increment. He says there wouldn’t be any credit buying this year.
Barrow has also promised to construct roads from Kaur, NianiJah and other parts of rural Gambia.
Barrow is confident of defeating his opponents in the upcoming polls.
