President Adama Barrow has dropped another bombshell. Speaking at a Brufut meeting on Sunday, Barrow has accused an unnamed opposition party leadership (presumably the United Democratic Party UDP) of trying to sell the country to some corrupt businessmen. Barrow has also accused the leadership of the party of quid pro quo, criminal syndicate among other damning allegations. According to Barrow, the party in question, has even signed an undertaken with some businessmen by promising to appoint them cabinet ministers in the event their party wins the Presidency.
“I have documents in my possession, which they signed with some businessmen, promising them ministerial posts if they happen to win the Presidency. I have the documents in my possession. They keep saying that President Barrow doesn’t talk, but any day that I start talking, some of them would run away from this country,” said Barrow, as he vowed to expose what he called “the criminal activities of the unnamed political party.
Barrow has also accused the leadership of the party in question of awarding a single source gas importation contract to Muhammed Bazzi, with the hope of enjoying favors from the corrupt Lebanese businessman. Mr. Barrow added that it was him, who blocked that single source gas importation contract that the UDP leadership allegedly wanted to award to Bazzi.
Barrow says he had a trove of disturbing information information linking the leadership of the unnamed political party to corruption. He said the party in question has no genuine desire to develop The Gambia, but to line their own pockets.
Former Foreign Minister and Vice President Ousainou Darboe had onetime become the De Facto President of The Gambia. He was running the government before his fallout with Barrow.
According to Barrow, Bazzi, used to enjoy a similar monopoly of the oil importation business in The Gambia during Jammeh’s rule. He said the UDP leadership wanted to maintain the same status quo when he (Barrow) had ascended to the Presidency. He said he prevented the party’s leadership from awarding the contract to Bazzi.
Bazzi has been designated as a terrorist financier by the United States Treasury Department. He is wanted by the US government for drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism financing.
Barrow said one of the reasons why he had fallen out with the party in question was because of their alleged corruption and lack of respect for due process in a democratic dispensation. He insists that he wouldn’t watch by and allow some corrupt politicians to mortgage this country to corrupt businessmen.
Barrow has vowed to expose the UDP when the 2021 campaign begins. He has called on Gambians to be mindful of such a divisive party. He said The Gambia is united family and citizens should avoid to be divided by politics of tribalism.
