US 2020 POST ELECTION EPISODES OF TEMPER TANRUM, DISDANE FOR DEMOGRACY, INSTUTIONS AND NORMS AND ITS IMPACT ON 3RD WORLD DEMOCRACIES AND PEACEFUL TRANSITION.
As Trump was gushing his America first agenda in the 2016 campaign season, a tiny country on the globe called Gambia was also in political altitudes with opposition parties forming coalitions to oust 22 yearsof painfully dictatorship. Trump’s outsider appeal attracted working and middle class suburban voters and most importantly his alignment with rural white voters put him across the finish line and became 45. Across the Atlantic in West Africa, Gambians rallied to take back their country from a criminal regime which had no regard nor value for any human life who just happen to disagree and the law was whatever fits the dictator. The Gambian people delivered the votes and reverse course but for the dictator it was untimely, unexpected and a loss that could have never happened thus unacceptable. He refuted the results, used sycophants at the National Assembly and judiciary to help him subvert the wishes of the voters. Thanks to the solid leadership of heads of states of the Economic Community of West State ECOWAS the impasse was peacefully resolved which resulted in the first transfer of power without a military takeover in the Gambia since independence in 1965.
Over the last 4 years we in the USA and our global spectators have witnessed the authoritarian and monocratic tendencies of Trump the supposed leader of the free world and custodian of the sacred democracy, his admiration for so-called strong men, despots and his desires for America to crown him with such powers. Thanks to over 200 years of solid institutions, the brilliance and foresight of the founders and the American people who always determine their destiny, Trumpism is decimated. However the remnants of the US 2020 postelection episode is a very treacherousprecedence on steroids that will be embraced specially in third world countries long after Trump; incumbents not accepting elections results when they loss, put up burgess unmerited legal fights with the backing of a lied quenched group of hypnotized believers can havefatal challenges and consequences in societies where the guardrails and balance of power are fragile, anignition and fuel for mayhem and destabilization.
As the beacon of democracy, the shiny city on the hill and the global leader, America cannot afford to set such an example because power hungry autocrats are watching and have all intentions to emulate and entrench themselves in power when it happened in our backyard, the Best and Biggest democracy. 2020 have taught us that no single nation is an island, exhibit 1:Covid19, the world is a global village and economy. Secondly, here in America it taught us that there is still work to be done to continue to nurture, nourish and strengthen the democratic institutions and put them in the fiduciary of people who cherish them and will work tirelessly to protect and defend them. The biggest perilto democracy is the deficiency of men and women with solid moral character and persuasion and the prevalence of sycophants and alternate realisms.
“The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment”. – Robert M. Hutchins
