The former Chief Executive Officer of OIC Gambia Lamin Sanneh is interested in the United Democratic Party (UDP) flag bearer-ship position, which was recently publicized by the party, sources close to the party, have intimated, Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Sanneh hasn’t submitted his application yet, but sources within the party said he is likely going to submit his application before the April 7th deadline for the submission of applications.

In a statement issued March 27th, the UDP leadership said: “The United Democratic Party (UDP) hereby notifies the general public that the Party’s Central Committee is inviting applications for the position of the party’s Presidential Candidate for the upcoming Presidential election slated for 4th December 2021,”

“Applications will remain open until Wednesday 7th April 2021 at 00.00 am. All interested applicants are invited to submit their applications to the UDP Central Committee before that stipulated deadline,” the statement added.

Interested applicants were also advised to ensure that they meet the necessary qualifications “criteria for the office of President, as provided under Section 62 of the Constitution of The Gambia 1997.”

“All applicants are further advised to address their applications to and submit the same to the Party’s Central Committee headed by the National President at our UDP Manjai Bureau before the stipulated deadline. All applications will be vetted and considered by the Party’s Central Committee for approval and subsequent selection by the Selection Committee, in accordance with Article 23, paragraphs 3 (b and c) of the Party’s Constitution,” a statement signed by Alhagie S Darboe, the Senior Administrative Secretary of the party stated.

Lamin Sanneh has been listed on his linkedin page as “Maurice · ‎Executive Director Finance and Investment · ‎Hashi Energy Holdings Ltd Mauritius. Responsible for assessing the financial performance of the company as well as possible risks and investments in our operating markets.”

He resigned from Gambia’s OIC in 2019 for unexplained reasons. This followed the fallout between President Barrow and his former UDP colleagues: former Vice President Ousainou Darboe and co.

According to UDP sources, Lamin Sanneh, has been a financier of the party. He also has a longstanding relationship, sources said.

There was no contact detail listed for Mr. Sanneh to reach him for comment, but sources close to the party said Sanneh is among those who are interested in the position of Presidential candidate.

It is not clear if the UDP leader Ousainou Darboe would apply for the position of Presidential candidate, but Darboe told his followers last year that there are only three thing that can prevent him from running for the Presidency: death, infamy of mind, or his party not selecting him. His statement stemmed from claims by his critics that he (Darboe) has been disqualified by the 1997 constitution to vey for Presidential elections.  His critics cited his past conviction record under Jammeh’s rule.

Darboe was fired from Barrow’s rule. He has also been cited for tax evasion under the past regime, a matter he challenged in court, which he lost and was ordered by Justice Mam Yassion Sey to pay his tax liabilities to the new Barrow government. He was ordered to pay close to two million dalasis. It is not clear if Darboe had settle his liabilities as ordered by the court.
