Police in the CRR have arrested and taken into custody, a 29 year old native of Gunjur for allegedly using a fire Arm without licenses.
The suspect, one Phillip Gomez is said to have shot and killed a hippo between Sankuley kunda and Boraba, which was later found flouting in the river at Janjanbureh.
The killed hippo was sighted by residents of that island community and it stirred anger amongst conservationists, claiming that with the unrelenting killing of these endangered species, the Gambia may soon have them extincted.
According to the Wildlife Act of the Gambia, the Police can arrest and prosecute any violator of the act. Residents of Janjanbureh are happy that the recent Hippo killer is arrested and praised the police for the Swift act in curbing what many consider a heinous act.
Meanwhile the accused is held at Janjanbureh Police station and he’s expected to be in court anytime soon.
The police spokesman Superintendent Lamin Njie could not be reached for comment at press time, but reliable sources have confirmed the arrest of the Gunjur man.
