The newly inaugurated Gunjur Immigration post came under arm attack last night, leaving some officers to sustain injuries. The incident happened in the early hours of Friday morning. The attackers are at large. They are yet to be arrested.
Locals in Gunjur told Freedom Newspaper that had been without the intervention of the fire personnel at the nearby station, some lives could have been lost. The attackers were said to be “Susus”. They descended at the Immigration post and attacked the officers. Sources said the attackers are believed to be Guinean Conakry nationals. They were heard speaking “Susu and Wollof” at the time of the incident. Their Wollof wasn’t that good, said a source.
Two immigration officers were left injured during the attack and one fire officer. One of the injured officers told the investigators that he recognized one of the attackers. The officer was able to escape to the nearby fire station to seek reinforcement.
The Gunjur Immigration was inaugurated this past Wednesday together with the Kartong new post. Sources said there are two reasons that could be linked to the attack. One, the attackers (thieves) thought that there was cash in the new Gunjur office. Unfortunately for them, they did not find any cash when attacked the office, said our sources. Immigration cash collections are now handled by the bank, our sources stated. Monies are now paid to the bank, our sources added.
The attack happened at a time when the Immigration Department had embarked on its peak collection of residential permit fees from non-Gambians.
Sources also said the Gunjur beach has of late become a drug peddling zone by criminals mainly from the West African sub-region.
Meanwhile, the police are investigating the incident.
