Dear Editor,

There is an African proverb which states that “people are like chameleons; circumstances make them change their colors”. This proverb is so true to current political situation in The Gambia. A lot of People who fought against military dictatorship in the country have forgotten so soon and they have changed colors. These chameleons are defending the evil alliance between Former Dictator Yaya Jammeh’s APRC and President Adama Barrow’s NPP. The latest chameleon is Mr Jeffery Smith, a former  Staff of the Robert F. Kennedy Center For Justice & Human Rights.
Fatu Network reportedly attributed the statements below to Mr Smith.
Some decent context here on Gambia, especially in light of misleading and false headlines of the past few days. Importantly: No, former dictator Yahya Jammeh is not in a formal alliance with the ruling party. And no, he hasn’t been granted amnesty,” Mr Smith Chastised.
It is not only disappointing and disingenuous for Mr Smith to accuse The Gambian media for making “misleading and false headlines in the past few days” regarding APRC and NPP political alliance but also outrageous and dishonest to bluntly and openly deny that Former Dictator Yaya Jammeh is not in a formal alliance with President Adama Barrow’s NPP. This is also highest form of hypocrisy and deliberate efforts to approve  and recognize incompetent administration which is so desperate to cling on to power while denying justice to many citizens . Mr Smith’s dismissal of this political alliance is an important part of systematic campaign by diaspora media and few selfish people who careless about democracy and rule of law to prevail in the country. The Misinformation and deception are the hallmarks of authoritarianism that resulted to horrific human rights violations in The Gambia and must be defeated to ensure that truth , justice and rule of law is restored in our beloved country. In order to expose falsehood  and misinformation campaign by Mr Smith and his friends in the media, here is an authoritative evidence below which totally refuted and dismissed the baseless claims stated above.
According to Standard Newspaper publication on September 6, 2021:

“The former ruling APRC party announced on Saturday that it has agreed to form an alliance with President Barrow’s National People’s Party, NPP, for the December 4th presidential election after party founder and ex-president Yahya Jammeh gave approval”.

Standard Newspaper went on to states that “ a key condition for the alliance is allowing former president Jammeh to return to The Gambia and that the condition will come into effect when President Barrow wins re-election. Jammeh was consulted about the talks and had given his blessings to the proposal for the alliance. Whatever we are doing, former president Jammeh is aware of it,”.

From the above statements, it is clear to every honest and decent human being that not only former Dictator Jammeh has participated in negotiation of this political agreement between APRC and NPP but had agreed and approved the key demand for his peaceful return to the country. The agreement also indicates that Jammeh will be offered full amnesty without taking any responsibility for human rights violations that took place during the 22 years of brutality and lawlessness that happened in The Gambia. For Mr Smith to suggest  that Jammeh hasn’t been granted amnesty in this formal agreement is also the highest form of deception and misinformation designed to give legitimacy to APRC and NPP alliance for political expediency. Thus the alliance has never been about the supreme interest of the citizens but only about narrow political and security objectives such as to continue dictatorial tactics for entrenchment of Mr Barrow in Banjul and to protect former Dictator  Jammeh and his cronies from facing Justice. Therefore Mr Smith’s claims about the APRC and NPP alliance and characterization of media headlines as “misleading and false”  are not factual claims. The fact checking or truth squad give four Pinocchios to Mr Smith’s claims for misleading and deliberately distorting facts about the political alliance between APRC and NPP and media headlines. The truth squad’s goal is to keep Mr Smith and his cronies in media honest so that decency and justice could prevail in The Gambia.

Thank you.

Max Jarju
